今就此同闻众中自有三段。第一人先列声闻众。第二从菩萨摩诃萨以下即列菩萨众也。第三从尔时释提恒因下讫退坐一面列凡夫众也。但众来之始未必如此。黑白前后无的次第。盖是出经者比次前后令条然可视。又欲分别高下目铭凡圣致使有此次第也。又意致寻求则有事有理。所言事者声闻常在佛左右。旦夕承奉不辨于游方益物。唯护戒清净形迹交密。是故在前而列。尚其亲密之怀。菩萨既以慈悲为先荷护度人为誓。无方利物化他为务。不得常在佛侧旦夕侍觐。形迹交疏于中而列也。凡夫进则不及菩萨退则有谢声闻。唯以五尘自呴受爱染为累。是故经家贬其凡猥在后而列也。理者声闻背生死苦乐涅槃乐。凡夫乐生死苦背涅槃乐。是故声闻在前凡夫在后。何以知然。声闻之人为三毒所恼八苦所煎。是故弃背生死之苦乐求涅槃之乐。凡夫爱著有为憎坏无为。菩萨则两舍居空虽乐涅槃不同声闻。畏生死苦自求涅槃。虽乐生死不等凡夫有爱着之心。但为求化他常求利物。是故维摩经言不舍有为不住无为此之谓也。二意如此三众可见
