Notes on Chinese Romanization

In a historical work such as this, expressing Chinese personal and place-names in English is an endeavor fraught with dilemmas. Pronunciation variations among Chinese dialects and regions have historically contributed to inconsistent English spellings. Imperfect knowledge of Chinese, English, and/or of the various Romanization systems developed over the past century or so has led to a multiplicity of spellings, some sensible, some whimsical, and others perplexing.

As a rule, I have spelled personal names of key figures who were widely known in the West as they were spelled at the time, or as they themselves spelled them (if known). I have generally followed the Chinese custom of putting the surname first (as in Chiang Kai-shek), but not always (i.e., Mayling Soong, K. C. Wu). Similarly, I have spelled place-names that were well known to English-speaking readers in the manner they were spelled (apart from Peking/Peiping, which, so as not to overly tax the nonspecialist reader with historical explanations tangential to the main story, appears as "Beijing" throughout). The Nationalist Party (variously spelled Kuomintang or Guomindang) appears as "Kuomintang." Apart from these, for which a brief key is provided below, I have generally used the P.R.C.'s Pinyin Romanization system.

  • Selected Poems, 1930-1988

    Selected Poems, 1930-1988

It was as a poet that Samuel Beckett launched himself in the little reviews of 1930s Paris, and as a poet that he ended his career. This new selection, from Whoroscope (1930) to 'what is the word' (1988), describes a lifetime's arc of writing. It was as a poet moreover that Beckett made his first breakthrough into writing in French, and the Selected Poems represents work in both languages, including the sequence of brief but highly crafted mirlitonnades, which did so much to usher in the style of his late prose, and come as close as anything he wrote to honouring the ambition to 'bore one hole after another in language, until what lurks behind it - be it something or nothing - begins to seep through.' Also included are several of Beckett's translations from contemporaries - Apollinaire, Eluard, Michaux, Montale - in versions which count among his own poetic achievements. It is edited by David Wheatley.

    Cat in Glass

The eight tales in this collection by Nancy Etchemendy weave great suspense with interesting plots and unusual characters. "Lunch at Etienne's" is a story narrated by a woman who is surrounded by death but doesn't seem to realize it. "Cat in Glass" is about a mysterious, malevolent sculpted cat that commits gruesome murders and is told from the point of view of the sculpture's frightened and bewildered owner. There is also "The Sailor's Bargain", a captivating story about an orphan whose haunting dreams lead to a stark revelation of another life, and "The Lily and the Weaver's Heart", in which a one-eyed Jacinth dares to take her place in a cruel world by risking a journey that is usually reserved for the most able-bodied men of the culture.
