或问前所言某等谨识之。已得其要领矣。然皆为百姓谋者也。亦有自为谋之道乎。某等既博一官。家有父母不能奉养。子弟不能教育。敢问其法云何曰是莫如俭矣尝见穷措大到任后倾信门丁捉弄。任意挥霍。衣服车马仪从件件讲究。又好馈赠往来。彼以为广交馈赠。可以树党援而邀宪眷乎。不知 圣人在上。各宪洁己奉公。我果能尽心爱民。整饬地方。大宪自当加之异数。岂肯计较各属馈送之有无丰啬哉。至于衣服车马仪从。则尤可不必讲究。我辈既已得官。虽服千金之裘。何加于我。亦何能动人。虽敝衣破轿。何损于我。亦何至取厌于人。若性好华饰。但须每年将补服换用新鲜者。尽足以示观瞻。若以为致饰衣服舆从。或可动百姓之敬爱乎。不知百姓于官长其勤而清者。则爱之敬之。至于外饰衣服舆从。百姓方厌恶之。訾议之。谓是皆吾民之膏脂也。则皆无识门丁卑贱下流之鄙见也。尝见有甫不能守俭只缘打不破图好看一念彻底思之好看何益经得官履任。任意挥霍。事事以华美丰腴相尚。只图好看。卒之入不敷出。私债渐多。不至亏挪帑项。贻累亲朋不止。其既也。身受监追。家遭籍没。子孙贫乏。至不能以自存。则皆不俭之所至也。试思我辈居馆餬口时。每年得不过数金数十金。亦须度活赡家。一行作吏。养廉所得。至少亦六百金。多则千金八百金。何不追想居馆时寒俭。仿照行之顾。必自投于债乡。甘罹于法网也乎。况不俭必不能廉。不廉恐至奇祸。岂但监追籍没己哉。我辈为外吏。俭为第一关键。此关持守不严。则一切无足观矣。抑又思之。俭之一字。不但外官当谨懔也。其部院京官。并米俸无多。尤当恪守。须知衣履稍不华饰。君子爱人以德。同官中断无笑我者。即笑我亦笑我酸耳。酸乃秀才本等。况家风如此。何害焉。其笑人俭约者。皆卑贱下流无识之人也。我京朝官也。乃以博下流之欢喜而堕其素守。改其家风哉。
