《现代汉语递进范畴研究》遵循形式和意义、描写和解释、静态与动态相结合的三大原则，详细讨论了递进的语义系统，从意义出发给递进范畴进行了分类，并寻求形式上的验证。在对客观语言事实充分描写的基础上，又从语义、语用、认知、逻辑等各个角度，对一系列与递进范畴有关的现象作出了比较合理的解释，从而揭示了递进范畴的本质特征。该书还在语法化理论的指导下，加强了对递进句式的历时研究，有意识地将递进现象的共时变异同历时发展结合起来研究，不但探寻了汉语递进范畴的发展演化历程，而且还对递进关系共时平面的各种语言现象作出了历时的解释。
