本书由凡尔纳的两部作品组成，即《蓓根的五亿法郎》和《天边灯塔》。1878年，流亡中的巴夏尔·格鲁塞用安德烈·洛里这个名字寄给赫泽尔一部名为《朗日沃尔的遗产》的小说。赫泽尔要求儒勒·凡尔纳负责重写这部小说，这就有了现在的《培根的五亿法郎》。
